I’ve seen a few users say they wish they could add guests directly from their contact list. The good news is that you can! Of course you still only add one at a time, but this is still quicker than having to manually enter each guest’s info.
So how do you do it?
Option 1: Press the “Add from Contacts” button in the title bar
Option 2: Press the menu button on your phone and select the “Add From Contacts” menu item
Now all you have to do is select the contact you want and viola!
There you go as simple as that.
You can do the same for Vendors following a similar procedure.
So as promised, I worked through all the user’s e-mails and suggestions.
Again, I have to thank everyone who took the time to provide useful feedback. I created a list of all updates that I believe are feasible and would provide value to users.
One recurring request is that of data syncing. Now this is a great idea and one that I wish to have included from the start. It’s also one that I’ve been struggling with from the inception of Wedding Plandroid. While that is the most requested feature, I probably will bench it to later this year. There are several ways to implement it but I still require some time (and possible better infrastructure) to implement it. User feedback on this would be great and very much appreciated.
So the title of this post indicates that I’ll actually announce what I’ll be doing and not just what I’m putting aside for now. The first update I’d like to make would be to include a Wedding Plandroid countdown widget. I’ve always loved widgets on Android and there should be no reason for users to download a separate one. I’m starting on it this week and I hope it won’t take to long to get out the development door.
The next major update would be to finally make the app Honeycomb compatible. It really is a shame that it doesn’t simply work on Honeycomb tablets and something I didn’t really know with my first release of the app. I want as many people as possible to use this app and tablets make up a big percentage of Android users. So for you tablet users out there, please hang in there, your time will come!
I’m also considering doing a series of “Did you know?” posts on this blog. I find that many users miss out on some of the features and functionality of Wedding Plandroid, simply because they don’t know about them. So expect to see a few of those in the coming weeks.
As always, thanks for using my app and stay tuned for more!
Disclaimer: Please note that I’m not a full time Android developer. I work on this app in my spare time when my family, work or gaming/football addiction allow for it. I always try to make time for app improvements, but I can’t guarantee any set dates for these updates. So please be patient for future releases.
2011 has been a great year for Wedding Plandroid. I can’t believe 2012 is already up and running!
I took a much needed break over December and that’s mostly why this site has been so quiet. I did manage to do a couple of quick bug fixes over this period, so it wasn’t all rest and relaxation. That and I’ve been trying to figure out where to go next. I’m torn between starting a new project or improving Wedding Plandroid over the next few months.
I’ve been getting a lot of feedback from mostly happy users. The feedback has been positive, but it has show me that there are a host of features and improvements I can make to Wedding Plandroid. I’d love to start on a new project, but it seems that Wedding Plandroid still has a lot of room for growth. The current build is pretty stable and I haven’t had any mayor re-occuring crashes since the last update.
I think I’ll take the next 2 weeks and jot down short and long term improvements. From there I’ll update the site to keep everyone informed of what is coming in the next couple of months.
Again, I would just like to thank all the users for taking time to contact me and help improve this app. I really do appreciated it. I can’t promise to use all your suggestions, but I can at least take it into consideration ;)
Watch this space.
So in the next 2 weeks I’ll be releasing an update for Wedding Plandroid. I’ve added a new feature that I believe will help people search for relevant vendors much easier in a specific location.
Once the update is released, you can go to the Vendor section, press menu and select the option to Search Location. This will open the screen where you can enter the vendor/business you are looking for as well as the area where you’d like to search in. This will then open up the Google Maps application and start the search.
I initially planned to use the Google Places API and keep everything located inside the app. While this might still happen in a future release, I found that the Google Maps search function was a lot more robust and provided much better results. I think this is a great little feature to add to the Wedding Plandroid experience.
Unfortunately, you can’t add the located vendor info back into the app. That’s why I’d still like to (at some point) use the Google Places API so that the results can be loaded directly into Wedding Plandroid.
This update will also include ad placements. I understand how annoying these can be for users, so I’m trying to keep it to a minimum. I honestly hope that users will understand and not be put off by these ads. Developers need money too ;)
I’m still playing around with a screen unlocker or just banner ads. I’ll see which works best.
So that’s about it. The update should be out by next week if all goes well.
PS: To those of you who have submitted bugs or small requests, I haven’t forgotten about you.
Once this update is live there are several small tweaks I’ll be making to improve the program. I appreciate all the feedback and try to implement it as best I can.
Time is unfortunately not the best friend of a part time developer.
Early in 2011 I decided to try my hand at Android development.
I initially planned to create some sort of cookbook/recipe app with a friend of mine, who then mentioned that she wish she had a wedding planner app. At the time she had just bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab and was busy helping a friend plan a wedding.
This reminded me of how my wife and I had a tough time planning and keeping track of all things wedding related. DIY weddings aren’t the easiest things in the world to do. So I though that a wedding planning app would actually be great and I thought there was some good value in it.
I scoured the Market Place and found only a few apps doing this and though that there was room for a similar app. So I got down learning Android development and my wife helped out with the content. Having done most of our wedding planning, I couldn’t think of a better source for help. Also, she was free.
4 Months later (I’m only a part-time developer) the app was finished and ready to go, but then I found the Google Africa Developer Challenge and decided to enter . So it took a while and eventually the app made it’s way to the finalist round where it ended up getting an honorable mention. If you’re interested, you can find more info about that event here.
And so I finally got around to launching the app on 18 August 2011. Since then the app has had over 10 000 downloads – about 9000 more than I expected! A very big thank you to all the users who have downloaded, rated and commented on the app!
After the Google competition, I had the pleasure of meeting with some wonderful people who gave me some great ideas on how to expand and improve on the app. So there are a lot of updates coming in the future.
I truly hope you enjoy the application and please feel free to comment and help make Wedding Plandroid the best wedding planning application on Android!
And more than anything, good luck with planning your wedding!
